That picture doesn't show K's wrist, which he held sharply bent, not straight as in the normal playing posture.

I saw him play thus through numerous rehearsals and 3 performances, often from just a few meters away, and at various angles. I'm as sure of this as anyone can be of any memory--and it's a story I've been telling for decades, including ~12 years ago on this list!

However, I realize that I cannot personally testify to anything more than the hand position. I was *told* that he used a normal violin, but apparently I was misinformed: see http://www.cozio.com/Instrument.aspx?id=1478 .

A shock: while researching this online, I found that the 1967 performance of the Schoenberg concerto in wh. I participated has now been issued commercially on CD. It's part of a large, boxed, commemorative set of Kolisch recordings, remastered and digitally cleaned up.
