It may be a trivial point, but the smudges in the wedges are an artifact of the process by which the image was actually put on the paper, and not how the score was produced. The smudges are more apt to occur with offset printing, where the ink will sometimes run just a bit, or by lower resolution settings on computer printers. The higher the resolution, the less smudging, or the less noticeable it will be.
