If you want to open a can of worms (or as Dennis Collins would say
"another kettle of fish"), some suggest that such timpani notation
markings were meant to be played as rather festive embellishments,
including physical displays with the drummer waving the beaters in the
air, etc. That makes a lot of sense to me because many princely court
orchestras, their timpani player was usually from a military
attachment or guard unit assigned to the court.

But my editor doesn't want me to tamper with that notation, but thanks
much for your suggestions  ;)
