I was using MusicMatch (provided by HP on my desktop) at 128 kbit/s. for those
figures. I just tried again at 320 kbit/s., and confirmed your first finding:

MP3 -- 128 -- 2949
MP3 -- 320 -- 7373
wav - 1283.2 32505
I haven't looked at content variation. Can you easily post
some examples?
