It really requires 13 letters. In addition to the 12 latin letters (A E H I K L M N O P U W) there is also a glottal-stop letter, usually notated as an apostrophe, but it looks more like an opening single quote. Some has estimated that the relative frequency of the glottal stop in the language is about equivalent to the letter "N" in the English language. Although many texts are still written without the glottal stop (thanks to the missionaries in the 18th/19th century), modern orthography strongly prefers including the glottal stop.
