A somewhat workable method has been outlined here before. Basically,
what you should do is start a new file in Fin2004 and save as ETF. Open
it up in a text editor, and compare it to the ETF your friend sends you
from Fin2006. I think what you need to do is copy the first bunch of
lines from the 2004 file (starting with ^header, ending with a blank
line) and paste it in place of the corresponding bunch of lines in the
Fin2006 file. This should allow you to open the Fin2006 file, although
not all details will be preserved.
I think you might have better luck using MusicXML to go back and forth,
but I'm not up on the various permutations. Perhaps Michael Good will
chime in.

Thanks a bunch. The first suggestion worked. Fortunately, the stuff
he's doing (so far) has been pretty simple.
