Hi David;
Yeah, well I guess the sky will always be falling in bits and pieces, I'm
just saying someone should be minding the store and doing what they can to
help people attain some degree of coherence in their world. Literacy isn't
limited to winning spelling bee's or being able to rattle off a list of
favorite sophisticated literary works, but goes to the issue of giving
people the tools they need to grapple with their lives and their place in
the world, find some coherence and enabling informed reasoning. Now that
we're becoming a more global, the fact that many Americans have trouble
with their native language, never mind a second language (which many
countries do not find unusual), and the fact that there is such a huge
disparity between the have's and have not's here, this all puts Americans
at a disadvantage when it comes to how we function (or dysfunction) with
each other and our global neighbors. And you're reference to King George
and his band of (hyperpatriot/ethnocentric/moneygrubbing) hooligans is
understood; I almost said something in the last email about the fact if
our leaders act like ignorant neaderthals, how does that help the cause of
coherent rational thinking in our culture? And as far as muddling, I would
find it far more agreeable to innocently muddle that to rapaciously
meddle, which has been the "proactive" and aggressive stance of this
administration since day one.

by the way, I sent some interesting links to sites that are devoted to
eliminating (or at least controlling) muzak and other noise pollution to
the Finale list. maybe it won't amount to much impact, but adding our
voices to the call for reform is something that we all can do without a
huge commitment of time and personal resources. And, if you recall the
musicians strike of 1948(??) it brought international attention to the
issues and forced the money making machines of the industry to their
knees.
