Oliver Googlebooks has digitized an enormous number of PD works into PDF files available free for downloading. These PDF files are merely graphical images of the pages, so they aren't searchable. It isn't like the Project Gutenberg books which are captured using OCR technology so the files are actual text and thus are searchable. Go to http://books.google.com and enter Music in the search bar and you'll be amazed at how many music books have already been digitized. enter Music Dictionary and you'll find several which you can download and keep on your desktop for quick access. Click Full View radio button to see a list containing only books which are possible to view in their entirety. Many of these are available for download, others aren't. I'm not sure what determines this ability, since some of the clearly PD works aren't available for download. Interestingly enough, even though the PDF files aren't searchable on your computer, GoogleBooks highlights your search term in each book it has listed, so Google can search them! And many of these are downloadable and are works that I, for one, have only read about but never had a chance to actually see, let alone own a copy of.
