How would that apply to harmonic structures? Is that seven notes
of a melody, seven notes of chordal structures, or what? What
about distinctive rhythms? :) Seems like much too grey an area

Rhythms haven't been shown to be copyrightable, and supposedly
chord progressions and titles aren't copyrightable either.
I'm pretty sure David is correct. Otherwise somebody would have
claimed copyright in the 12-bar blues progression long ago!
Bo Diddly tried to copyright the "hambone" rhythm that is featured so
prominently in much of his music, and failed. (For those who are
curious, it is exactly like a 3-2 rumba clave, or dotted-quarter,
dotted quarter, quarter, then quarter rest, quarter, quarter, quarter
rest.)
