To be quite clear:
In older versions of Finale, hyphens disappeared in one particular
situation: when syllables got so close together that they are almost
touching. This was useful in pieces where lyric spacing was very
tight, and is accepted practice for certain editors. In 2006b a bug
appeared with the following effect: hyphens stopped disappearing in
this particular situation. Furthermore, when the distance between
syllables got less than a certain value, the hyphens were were too
far to the right.
This bug was still present in 2007 (original), but an effort was made
to correct it in 2007a. The "correction" didn't work as it should:
many syllables disappeared in situations where they should not. The
minimum distance at which syllables start disappearing was set too
high. Another effect of the "correction" was that a hyphen at the
very end of a system was too close to the syllable preceding it.
In 2007c, the bug concerning the hyphen at the end of a system was
corrected, but the disappearing syllables bug is still there: some
hyphens just don't show up. It is worth stressing that turning Smart
Hyphens on or off, or updating them, has no effect on this bug. This
bug has been acknowledged by MakeMusic, but nobody can give any
information as to if and when it might be corrected.
To sum up:
- From 2006b to 2007 (inclusive) all hyphens show, but hyphens
between closely-spaced syllables are too far right.
- In 2007a and 2007b, many (too many) hyphens disappear and a hyphen
at the end of the system is too near to the syllable before it.
- In 2007c, too many hyphens disappear, but a hyphen at the end of
the system now displays correctly.
The bottom line: any serious work involving lyrics is best done in
pre-2006b versions. If you have it, I would recommend going back to
2005b for work with lyrics.

Does anyone else still have disappearing hypens in lyrics in
Finale 2007?
I met a couple of developers who deny the problem ever existed.
I think the problem is the hyphens DIDN'T disappear when the
syllables got to close to each other, a useful feature that used to
happen in a previous version. And now the hyphen is too far to the
right when syllables are close, with no easy way to move it to a
more central position.
There is another issue possible - that is, if you have turned off
Automatic Update Hyphens and Word Extensions, as I have to save CPU
load, then any time you edit a lyric, the hyphens and lyric
extensions don't show up on that word until you go to the Edit Menu
and hit Update Smart Word Extensions and Hyphens.
