i would think this would be something uncommon in the pre-digital engraving era, since the first thing cut into the engraving plates was the staff, with noteheads, stems and beams coming afterwards. of course there are ways of correcting the plates, maybe by filling in the lines with something... but my understanding is that the established order of production tasks aimed to have things done properly the first time, because of the enormous amount of time and effort required for corrections.
