That's exactly it--I don't want it to sound any differently. In this slow tempo, rhythms between instruments tend to not be as tight as I'd like--they're not "locked in." The only way to perform it is by subdividing. However, in several sections, note values are consistently relatively long, on average. If it were running 8ths or 16ths at this slow tempo, subdividing is not a great task. But, lots of halfs, wholes and dotted-wholes tend to become a bit sloppy in such a slow tempo.

Doubling the tempo and doubling the note values won't change that one little bit -- when you subdivide you effectively double the tempo and double the note value (e.g. a half note becomes 4 counts, twice as fast as the quarter note pulse), so everything remains constant, relative to each other. In other words, a half note receiving 4 8th-note pulses in a subdivided 4/4 will end up being a whole note receiving 4 quarter note pulses in a non-subdivided 4/4.

And the pulses, if I recall your original message, will be q=76 at the new, doubled speed, or will be 8th=76 (q=38) in the original.

People who can't play it subdivided won't play it any better in 4/4 with doubled note values. Poor musicianship is poor musicianship.
