You just answered your own question. That's what it's called:
Basso. Of course the conductor has to be educated enough to realize
that it does NOT mean to be played only by the contrabass, but
doublings by any instruments with the required range were apparently
expected: cello, gamba, bassoon, sackbutt, whatever!
