My hunch is there was some intonation issues with the flute family that prevented a general adoption by composers. If anyone has more knowledge about this, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks. Kim


The Baroque flute was a much quieter instrument than the modern flute, and if the recorder family can be taken as any indication, the lower members would be much softer in volume than the soprano members, so a bass flute based on Baroque flute design would never have been heard through an ensemble the way that a bassoon cuts through.
