For all you Mac gurus out there,
How can I simply transfer files from an old (non-USB, non-CD burning) MacOS
9.1 computer to a newer MacOS 10.4.9 computer using AppleTalk (or
otherwise), short of re-installing OS 10.4.8 on the newer computer from the
ground up?
This was possible when the newer computer ran 10.4.8, but it apparently
doesn't work in 10.4.9.
Your email was from April, but today at the MacFixit site there was
an article that might help you out.

Apple fix for Mac OS X 10.4.9 file sharing troubles
One of the consequences of the update to Mac OS X 10.4.9 has been
that users who connect between a Mac OS 9 (or earlier) computer and a
10.4.9 computer, using Apple File Sharing, have been unable to copy
files between the two computers. The problem could be solved, as we
reported, by restoring the earlier version of AppleFileServer.app,
but of course there is some risk involved when you mix-and-match
files from different versions of the system.
Now Apple have published a solution; in the Terminal on your 10.4.9
machine, enter this command on a single line, and hit Return:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer
TCPQuantum -int 327680
According to a well-written Infinite Loop article:
Adjusting the TCPQuantum parameter for the AFP server will
apparently prevent the timeouts and disconnects between the two
operating systems. TCPQuantum in AFP-speak represents a maximum size
for a block of data being transferred to or from an AFP server;
increasing the amount lowers the number of requests the server has to
make for data at the expense of a gradual increase in overhead.
Apple's note is written as if it applied only to 10.4.9 Mac OS X
Server; but the defaults write approach appears to work equally well
for ordinary Mac OS X machines. One Infinite Loop reader comments
that this fix even restored his ability to connect from a Mac OS 8.6
machine to a Tiger machine.
