My kilt is made of just about 7 years of fabric. It started out as 3.5 yards. The material was torn in half length wise. The ends were joined to make the total length. It was then hand sewn into pleats about three inches deep. The actual construction requires a certain amount of adjustment depending on the style of the kilt being made. The pleats can be sewn to show the design of the tartan or they can be sewn to show a uniform pattern.
