Excellent point, David, but poor example. Landini (1325-1397) was a generation younger than Machaut (c.1300-1377), but for the most part they were contemporaries working in different styles in two different countries, and Machaut was earlier, not later than Landini. Now DuFay or Josquin might make more sense.

But your point is certainly well made and well taken.
