Well, unfortunately they were also, for the most part, ignorant of (or perhaps just dismissive of) the medieval and renaissance theorists who had no such definition, since it didn't exist until the common-practice period. But if that's the definition that works for you, no problem. Just don't try analyzing medieval or renaissance music using IU theory!
