Check the archives for February 17 of this year for my almost identical
question: "The Midi setup on the Finale softsynth does not allow the dialog
box to appear. When I click "Softsynth settings" (for any device on the
list, including "none"), an error box says it cannot initialize softsynth
playback, device in use."

That didn't work for me, which is why I asked the question. It would not
allow playback setup at all.

I didn't do a custom setup when I installed it, so why this file was not
properly installed by 2007, I don't know. Jim Williams diagnosed the
problem. As soon as the softsynth was put into the directory, the Midi
setup worked.
