Check the archives for February 17 of this year for my almost identical question: "The Midi setup on the Finale softsynth does not allow the dialog box to appear. When I click "Softsynth settings" (for any device on the list, including "none"), an error box says it cannot initialize softsynth playback, device in use." >Any gm soundfont can be renamed to that same name and placed in the >Component Files folder and will work just fine. >And recent versions of Finale have allowed us to set playback to point >to any soundfont we have on our computer without needing to rename it >and copy it into the Component Files folder. That didn't work for me, which is why I asked the question. It would not allow playback setup at all. I didn't do a custom setup when I installed it, so why this file was not properly installed by 2007, I don't know. Jim Williams diagnosed the problem. As soon as the softsynth was put into the directory, the Midi setup worked.
