Are drum kits commonly called "Drum Sets" in the US?

Yes, but it's a generational thing. I grew up with "drum set" and "set drummer." On the other hand, the Percussion book we just got for "Bye Bye Birdie" still calls it a "trap set"! (Brings back memories of a 36" bass drum with a waterfall painted on the front and a blinking light inside. I'm not kidding!!! We worked with such a drummer back in the '60s in far-off, exotic Cedar Rapids, Iowa!)

But your points are all good and very well taken. Yes, I think most Yanks use English Horn rather than Cor Anglais. But you point out some glaring inconsistencies.
