"Bbsus(add2)" or "Bbsus4/2" (without the slash and with the "4/2"
stacked vertically, like "6/9") is pretty widely used and understood
in pop music. But I'm not sure if that's the chord that's actually
intended here. "Bb(add9, sus4)" is a bit ambiguous -- it's possible
that what's really wanted is "Bb9sus." The difference is, "Bb9sus"
has a b7 (Ab) in it and "Bbsus(add2)" does not.
Going back to the original subject, is anyone really happy with the
ugly way that "Avoid Chord Symbol Collision" in music spacing
affects note spacing? Or is it just me? I find it a real pain to
have to selectively redefine and reapply spacing (collision or not)
in order to get good-looking charts.
I wrote it up, along with about 20 other problems I have with the
chord tool, and sent it off to MakeMusic in 2005. (I also blasted, I
mean, gave helpful suggestions for improvement to the Chord Suffix
Editor.)
I suggested that the Avoid Collisions option, when Chords is checked,
only avoid collisions with other chords. As it works now, it avoids
horizontal collisions with the next item in the measure (note or
rest) regardless of whether that item has a chord attached to it or not.
But even if worked as I suggest, life won't be perfect because of the
way spacing is generally screwed up by chord symbols, I could see
measure like this being a headache to space properly, even if chord
spacing worked the way I wanted it to:
C7, D7sus4(b9),C7/E in the rhythm half note, eighth note, dotted
quarter.
There is no way to make that measure look perfect, and it requires a
fine eye to even make it legible. We can't expect Finale to handle
every eventuality.
Oh, and put lyrics on it too (as in a lead-sheet) and see how the
spacing gets NUTS to work out! The conflicting requirements of music
spacing, chord spacing/alignment, and lyrics is impossible. The best
one can hope for is a "less ugly than some other option" solution.
