Just got Finale '08 for Windows XP, and I'm creating my first jazz chart in this version -- and I'm not getting the swing playback. Any help? Please give me any tips about playback controls, human playback, etc...have no idea why this isn't working...is this a bug with '08? Grrr.

I don't know how you did it before, but in the Playback Controls window there is a little triangle to the left. Click it to open more options, and select Swing>Light. You can alter the value manually, but I find at a medium tempo Light gives me 75 which is as much as I can stand.

There are a few reasons why this won't work, though. If you have an expression set for playback for example, it WILL override the Playback Controls settings. Check the playback setting of any expressions you might have in the first few measures to make sure that they don't have a Swing setting that is set to 0 or some other number you don't want. I have done this by accident a couple of times when I duplicated and edited an expression I liked the look of without checking to see if it had a playback effect.

It is possible to assign a Human Playback setting to only a passage. If you have done this using the Human Playback plugin, these settings too will override the Playback Controls. I'm not sure how to erase this, though, I would have to play around for a bit to discover it.

Keep in mind too, that Swing only affects eighth notes. Tuplets, sixteenths, etc. will not be affected.

If you know all this already and Swing still doesn't work, you might have file corruption. Try quitting and restarting Finale, on the off chance that Finale just became unstable because of gamma rays or moonphase or something. Then try rebooting the computer. If that doesn't work, then the usual way to clear document corruption is to copy the contents of the file to a fresh document. You lose formatting and the like, but it beats the alternative )entering the music again from scratch.) When things that are supposed to work stop working, I always suspect corruption of some sort. It seems to be rampant in 2008.
