And so Les responds:

Okay, I'll bite --

I upgraded to '08 (Win) as soon as it was announced. My primary hope was
that some of the relatively (IMHO) minor bugs which had plagued '07 would be
repaired. My use is probably a little more casual than most on the list -
arrangements, original work for my orchestra. Occasionally other outside
projects....so my use therefore, may be as concentrated/intensely as many 10 -
12 hours a day for days/weeks on end - and then a week or two with no use
whatsoever. Most of my scores are full-orchestral, 22 - 28 staves are the
norm. Works (on occasion) as long as an hour or so; usually anything of that
size is created as multiple-movement/section files which are later merged.
And so, after the initial surprise of the new selection tool - and
re-programming my comfort/familiarity to its functionality, I found '08 on the
whole to be a positive upgrade. I have now come to really appreciate the
selection tool behavior. But:

Playback? Nearly never utilize it. But that's where I had a bit of a prob
with '08. A friend asked for specific musical cue advice throughout a VERY
imminent production of The Taming of the Shrew he was directing and I realized
it would probably take me less time to write him an incidental score than it
would to pull cues. And he was VERY pleased with the idea of using GPO
playback with an original Marsden score :) So far so good. I wrote the
score in three days, but then found playback in '08 to be VERY problematic.
(Incidentally: WinXP, 2G RAM, Athlon XP 1900+) Really bad dropouts; tempo
fluctuations caused by minor score complexities...the GPO playback was unusable
to me. I experimented with CPU overload settings, took an axe to polyphony
far beyond what I artistically found acceptable - and was eventually able,
through much coaxing and compromise - to achieve something acceptable though by
now means desireable. Then - just for 'fun', I transcribed one of the brief
movements as originally written to 2007 - and bingo! Perfect playback..
Really didn't want to convert the whole score back to '07, and fortunately my
friend has the musical discretion of a dead, deaf ox and was thrilled. But I
was not. And I didn't pursue the issue of GPO playback because it's only a
very occasional need, but still.....would be nice to know what the hell's going
on THERE....

Any ideas, anyone?

Best - and eager to try the Sibelius crossgrade as soon as time allows a bit of
experimentation....
