No trick, just brick walls. You need to have Finale 2005 or later.
Finale's lack of backward compatibility has been a sore spot for many of
us on this list.
There may be some relief with the Dolet plugin, but I don't have any
experience with 2005 going into 2003.
Notepad doesn't have any MusicXML capability, I'm pretty sure.
I'd say you need to at least install the latest version of notepad, so
that you can open the files.
