Your friend is of course correct, and furthermore the standard forms ("pizz.", "arco", "cresc." "dim." etc.) are much easier and faster for players to read and process than "pizzicato," "col aco", "crescendo", "diminuendo", etc. It's *very* nonstandard to write them out in full and under normal circumstances there's no good reason to do so.
