IMSLP may have been a terrific repository of public-domain scores, but it was a repository of scores which were public domain in Canada. Those scores were available to anybody who accessed the site, regardless of which country they logged in from, and that's where the trouble started.

There are some software allowed to be distributed only in Japan. I have
encountered they check my IP range upon download, and get rejected by
saying "you are not in Japan". This is getting more common in Japan
these days.

And apparently that software is extremely expensive, far more than essentially an individual running a goodwill site could afford. Which is a shame because of the great material which WAS legal for all countries which was on that web-site.

But as is so often the case, even if UE wouldn't have eventually won in court, the cost to fight the battle is more than most individuals can or should have to bear.

The most money wins, not the legally correct. And that's in a court of law.
