Hi all,

I'm curious as to how you feel about notating sub-beat rests in compound meters. In particular, something like a 6/8 bar with two eighths of silence and an eighth pickup to a dotted quarter on beat 2. Should the rests at the beginning of the bar be two eighth rests, or a quarter rest?

Not appealing to authority or anything, but our string orchestra was rehearsing something last night in 12/8 (might have been the Corelli Christmas Concerto), and it was always quarter rests rather than a string of 8th rests. Anyone who tries to read a quarter rest as representing a full beat is simply inexperienced.

My personal feeling is that it's easier to group the beats visually with the fewest rests, sort of like reducing an equation to its lowest form. And for the same reason I favor beaming 8ths in vocal music as I would in instrumental music. Others may have different taste.
