Am I nuts?

In 2008a, where has the command to tell how long the piece, or section of the piece, gone? I can't find it anywhere, and the manual is no help.

As I recall, you're on a Mac, so this may not be accurate for you, but for windows, the only way I can see to tell the length of the whole piece is to have it play, and read the time display on the Playback Controls. To avoid having the entire file play, you can change the Playback Options to begin playback either from the indicated measure or the left-most measure in window and have the last measure show. It will display the time from the beginning of the piece.

Here's from the Windows documentation:
*****
Elapsed time

If you need an accurate assessment of the real-time length of a section of music, the Selection Tool can help. The time displayed is based on the current tempo settings for the piece in the Playback Controls, including any tempo changes, ritards, and so on set up as playback effects on an expression.

To learn the real-time length of selected music

Click the Selection Tool and select a region. See Selecting music for some region-selecting shortcuts. From the Utilities Menu, choose Check Notation, then Check Elapsed Time. Or, while pressing the 5 key, double-click the highlighted area. A dialog box appears, displaying (1) the amount of time that has passed from the beginning of the piece to the beginning of the selected region; (2) the time that has passed from the beginning of the piece to the end of the selected region; and (3) the total time of the selected region itself (all in thousandths of a second).
Click OK (or press enter).

I found it by doing a search on "Time" and then scrolling down the huge list of every occasion of the word time, I found the term "elapsed time" and clicked on that to get to that information.

However I do notice this discrepancy -- playing the file I opened to try to help Ray find the location of shows a time of 00:03:24 on the playback controls. When I used the selection tool to highlight the entire work and then Utilities / Check Notation / Elapsed Time, it shows me that the piece is 00:03:25.5. Now I realize that 1.5 seconds out of a 3:24 piece isn't all that significant, one would think that since the program is the same in both cases, that it could look in the same place to find the same information to display in the two different locations.

Anyway, that's how to find the length of either a section or the entire file.
