What did you enter in the composite time signature?

In older versions, you had to enter EDU values. In your example, you should
have entered:
   1 1 1
             + +
1536 1024 1536
(and check "Use EDUs for beat duration")

Since 2008 (maybe 2007, I don't remember), you may enter

3+2+3 (all in the first field)

    8

(and UNCHECK "Use EDUs for beat duration")

Both methods sould give you correct beamings, when entering notes, or using
the "Rebeam Music" feature.
