I disagree that it has been like this with every update. Reproofing was a significant headache with all updates from v1.0 to roughly Fin97. I'm not talking about subtleties. Spacing would be screwed up, or accidentals and expressions jumped around. I actually had to write a custom plugin to help me upgrade one file created in v2. Plus, you had to upgrade files in stages. First, get it to the last v2 format, then to Fin02 (which had the best import of v2 files) then onwards.

However, after that I have been remarkably surprised that essentially from Fin2k thru Fin06 no rework and no version hopping is required. And from Fin07-08 as well. The only difficulty I had going from Fin06-07 was with certain accidental placements that a single edit to the accidental definition fixed for all instances.

I would be curious to know what kinds of problems you've seen upgrading files in recent versions. I of course use PDFs too. But I generally upgrade to the latest version if I need to make changes. In the 1990s I would never have done so.

I must say that doesn't bother me any more. It has been like this with almost every single update. I simply save PDFs of the files I am still using, and otherwise I simply revise them when I need to. I have many files from various previous versions on my computer, and when I need them I always spend some time updating them.

However, my needs may be slightly different from yours.
