I don't know that there's any standard, but perhaps you could peruse the noteheads in the EngraverFontExtras font and simply use something you think invokes the idea of the technique you want. Perhaps for exhale you could use a family of "x" noteheads and for inhale use diamond noteheads. That's just this singer/arranger/engraver's take on it.

Whatever you do, performer/conductor's notes should be sufficient.

To the creative and collective wisdom of the list:

I am putting together a piece that will need specialty noteheads for vocalists. They will be creating "effects" (a la the honda commercial, but not anywhere near as sophisticated or complex). Mostly, I want to notate that certain words be inhaled, and certain words be exhaled. Pitch is not important, but duration is. I have not seen anything like that in my limited choral experience. Is there a notation that has become anything like a "standard" for this? Does anyone have recommendations for noteheads to use for inhaling and exhaling (I was going to use some of the percussion noteheads)? Are there any (hopefully free) fonts that might help? There will be an explanatory page for the notation used, but I want to eliminate too much clutter and explanation in the staves.

As an aside, did they ever publish the "score" for the honda commercial (I've lost the weblink)? That would be really interesting to look at and study.

TIA
