Basler drumming is a long tradition associated with the Allemanish _Fastnacht_, which corresponds to pre-Lenten traditions elsewhere but is, to a large degree, pre-Christian, with supernatural elements quite distinct from the carnivals in the greater Rhineland (which, for their part, have strong political and satirical elements unknown further south). Not only is the drumming in Basel extraordinarily precise, but it is played over very long durations, day and night, at the height of the season, by numerous groups throughout the town. My friends from Basel are pretty evenly divided between those who insist that the drumming is the best reason to visit the city and those who insist that the drumming is the best excuse to take a holiday away from the city.
