hello listers

thought this might be useful since every now and again threads come up about the best way to set up PDFs from Finale etc. I've just discovered a very useful resource from the perspective of a printery that has to deal with end user generated PDFs or postscript files. The University of Queensland Printery receives electronic files from all over the planet plus internally from all faculties so it's well placed to know about the ins and outs of Postscript and PDFs received from knowledgeable to barely-computer-literate clients. The links are concerned with the printing of theses but the advice given about formatting PDFs and recommending PDF vers.1.4 (Acrobat 5.x) as a base standard (similar to Adobe's PDF/A (archive) format) has been very informative, eg for Macs they recommend sending a postscript file and they then do all the requisite distilling. The FAQ page talks about postcript emulation and PCL etc.
