There has to be a law against fraudulent copyright notices, isn't

Nope, there's not. You can claim copyright on the Mona Lisa if you
want.
Doesn't mean it has the force of law, though, but no one can do
anything to
you for saying so.
This whole public domain thing is a big issue. Disney is notorious for
taking something in the public domain (the story of Pocahantas,
Aladdin,
etc.), putting their own spin on it, then going after anyone like
piranhas
who dares to even use the names of the characters, let alone the
stories.
The fact is, if Disney sued you for making your own version of
Aladdin, they
would lose on the merits if it ever got to trial but by that time, the
average person (or even the average company) would be bankrupt
trying to
defend the suit against a behemoth like Disney, so most people
cave, even
though they are legally in the right and Disney doesn't have a leg
to stand
on.
Unbelievable.
I can't wait for someone to pull the rug out from under some big
company like Disney for that. That's not what copyright is for.
[shakes head and mutters under his breath "communism better..."
grumble, "big brother" mutter, mutter, "police state..." growl, "get
a cabin in Montana and a rifle to protect meself 'gainst them
revenooers" cough, cough...]
