This is a well- documented problem in WinFin as well. The solution from 
MAKEMUSIC is to trash the Finale and Midi preference files.

I cannot say that this is the solution for MacFin though;-)

Assuming that an expression made using the tools that Finale provides
could be considered to be unusual...

Yeah, the advice is good. I find tempo marking are good candidates.
As the playback hangs at 39%, check at around 39% of the way through
the piece for expressions with tempo playback. Failing that, try
deleting expressions IN A COPY OF THE FILE until you find the one,
then you can delete that one from the real file.
