Russell Peck (who passed away earlier this year) wrote a piece for
orchestra for the Louisville Orchestra based on this theme. It was
written for our light classics series. It was entertaining, but not his
best - the tune gets a little old by the end. I'm not sure he or the
work ever identified the source of the theme, though.
Below is a link to a "Tunatic," a free program that is supposed to
recognize and label a huge database of songs from microphone input. A
couple of guys on the trombone list are big on it (can you beat that for
a recommendation?).
