They were still sorting the church modes and the new ideas about keys during the baroque. I deal with this a lot with Telemann, Graupner, and Stoelzel's music. Sometimes it can be REALLY confusing. Although my editor mentioned he just finished a late baroque piece in the key of D flat major!
