Good points. And, I would make so bold as to aver, that if I were asked to write something for the LCJO, I would quickly find a venue in which to pat myself on the back. Way to go, even though you can't at present.

Doesn't the Lincoln Center group, led by Winton Marsalis (sp.), call it , "Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble?" Just went to hear them play a few months ago, but forget the exact name.

Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra.

It is differentiated from a "big band" (although their own website describes it as a big band) in that it does not play music for dancing, though much of the music it DOES play was either originally meant for dancing, or was derived from dance music.

There is a real problem coming up with a good name for a band like this. "Stage Band" was a euphemism to start with and is hopelessly dated. "Big Band" leads the listener to think Glen Miller's music will figure prominently, and in my opinion should only ever be used to refer to dance music from that era. "Jazz Ensemble" can refer to any size of group, so it is not specific enough. "Jazz Orchestra" might lead an uninformed listener to think there were strings involved, like the Metropole Orchestra, and frankly, it's a little pompous in my opinion. But that doesn't stop many groups, like Lincoln Centre, Maria Schneider, Vanguard and others from calling their groups by that name. "Large Jazz Ensemble" is accurate enough, I suppose, but it is a little unwieldy and most people don't know what exactly is being referred to.

Yup, it's a problem.

(Coincidentally, I was just contacted to do some writing for the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra. I can't do it, as it turns out, because the due date is too close and I have previous commitments, but I thought I would take advantage of the subject coming up like this to brag a bit. Okay, I'm done. As you were.)
