I've never used fretboards at all, but if I were to do so, my general
philosophy is based upon the question "how easy will it be for a
performer to read in "real life" conditions?" (more generally applied to
lyrics. What I'd do is a test page of the fretboards, and see how easily
they can be read. If they can't be read easily, they're too small,
whatever the page, system, or staff spacing.
