Knowing what I know about academia, I doubt it. Either the chosen text is written by the professor teaching the course, or it's just the easiest/best fit for the department/professor. Academics aren't organized enough to be corrupt in the way you allege. They are, however, remarkably lazy, which to me is the more likely explanation. And to be clear: I think what you describe is completely indefensible. I was always annoyed when the publisher of the textbook used by the course I taught at NYU was revised. Often (though not always), there were no real changes of content, just enough changes of layout to invalidate the page numbers in my syllabus. But the scam you describe is horrible and I think it should cause any department or instructor to reject such a text out of hand. -- David W.
