Hi, Kim. That usage makes sense when there are 1st and 2nd endings
in some parts, but not in others. But I am very much against doing
that because it causes problems and wastes time in rehearsals, so I
try to make sure that the score and every part are identical in
layout. (We've wasted MUCH too much time trying to figure out
sloppily copied Broadway show books!!!)
So I am of the opposite school, that each and every bar in a work
MUST have a unique and identical bar number. Thus if a 1st ending is
bar 8, the 2nd ending is bar 9. I know others disagree, but as a
practical matter I would do nothing else.
However, in the case you cite, the operative question is whether the
pickup beat is within the 2nd ending or not. Unless I'm just not
picturing what you tried to describe. Certainly a pickup would not
get a separate bar number, since it has to be included in one bar or
another. Or am I completely off base?
