(MacFin 2010) after massive fidgeting, found a way to work around
some problems associated with linked parts. there are various errors
which will cause 1) expressions to disappear in either the score or
some of the parts when using the dialogue box to reposition in some
circumstances; 2) broken links to not really function as broken
(expression moves in both SC and PT)
do it exactly in this order or a lifetime of frustration awaits you:
set your score list to NOT show on the top staff of SC/PTs, click on
the appropriate staves in the score and parts columns where the
expression should appear. do not set the category to align tempo
markings to the left barline (they disappear in some circumstances).
select and assign tempo marking(s) throughout the score at their
default position, ignoring for now any collisions that occur. open
another window showing a part (not the top staff of the SC) and
arrange the windows so that you can see SC and PT at once.
position the TOP staff expression in the score using the mouse or
arrow keys. adjust so it will work in the majority of parts to
reduce the amount of work you have to do later.
to reposition the tempo marking in the score on all but the top
staff, break the link (cmd-nudge/drag or cmd-opt-u) and adjust using
mouse or arrow keys. do not use the dialogue box to position
expressions on these staves!!!
do not use the clear manual positioning key, it will only reset the
positioning in the score.
to reposition the tempo marking on the TOP STAFF in the SC use the
dialogue box. otherwise the expression will move in all staves on
the SC and PT despite the link having already been broken. the
expression will appear linked (black) but will move independently of
the other staves in the score to which it is assigned, and
independently from the parts staves.
lastly, contact MM staff to let them know taht yet another person is
aware of just how bad the linked parts implementation and wants it
fixed.
