Ledger lines look too thick to me too. My personal opinion is that extended 
ledger lines do not necessarily shed light on reading notes in 2ds; yet, this 
may not always be accurate. A point where to set sights on could be the use of 
extended ledger lines needed to build up the stack of ledger lines required to 
reach a necessary pitch, like in measure 55.
