You have to do it through Time Machine itself. 
Unfortunately, that's all I know about it!  My 
son-in-law, who understands computer set it up 
for me, using my desktop Mac Mini as the Server 
for the external 1.5 tB drive.  So what you need 
is a smart son-in-law!!
