Linda, I read the subject line and saw "measure number panic" then saw answers related to the question in the body of the message and realized I had attempted an answer to a different question. If it is page numbers that are the problem, then it does sound as if you have deleted a text box with page number text inserts, in which case, replace the text block "holder" and put in the page number "text insert". (Shift/command/P).
