You can put all kinds of protections on a PDF, if you have full Acrobat or something similar. For example, if you're sending out a perusal score, you can make it so that the PDF won't print. And you can also protect the PDF so that it's not editable. Are there ways around these protections? Yes, certainly. But it means that the people who pirate your work will be only those who are really determined to do so, not those who are just provided with a casual opportunity.
