I've got you beat by a few years (I started with WordPerfect version 4.2 for DOS) and totally agree with you concerning MSWord. I find that WordPerfect gives me total control over every element, much like Finale does with music notation. And WordPerfect's survival despite many changes of development teams is what gives me hope that Sibelius could well survive and even flourish even if the London developers aren't in Avid's employ anymore. But I've just found out on the Sibelius list that Daniel Spreadbury, the brains behind Sibelius for the past few upgrades, is still answering questions on Sibelius's official support forum and is still using his Avid email address, so as I had originally thought, at least part of the London development team may still be working for Avid, just working from home telecommuting to an office in eastern Europe or elsewhere. And I remain hopeful that the people willing to put millions of dollars on the line to buy MakeMusic and supposedly infuse millions more into updating Finale's codebase are doing so thinking that it is a wise investment that will repay them with increased profits through sales or will turn them a tidy profit when they sell the company with the now-updated codebase to another music conglomerate. -- David H.
