I just posted this exact same question, but without waiting for a reply started in on workarounds. It's not so terribly bad. You can put a fake clef on the first note as expression (along with hidden transpositions for playback if needed). Then put in a real clef change on the next note but check the "Show Never" option in the clef definition dialog. As workarounds go it isn't so bad.
