John Howell's story about Arthur Squires took me back to my student days at
Cambridge. About 6 or 8 of us were crowded round a piano trying to sing
Tallis's 'The Lamentations of Jeremiah' from one copy of the music. It was all
in various C clefs. I also had a problem another time trying to sing music a
third down from the written notes----the work being transposed to suit the
occasion. i don't have perfect pitch but a third is too much! Obviously if
one's doing it frequently or happen to be a music scholar it becomes second
nature.
