thanks for the help.  i'm going to have to live with an 8th note 
sitting wrong in the staff in both SC and PTs (on the line).  i have 
used a stemless note with notehead changed to 8th rest to attach the 
end of a tuplet bracket (as custom smart shape) to an 
over-the-barline beamed and bracketed tuplet (8:9 and others).  this 
way i have the full length of the tuplet covered and it all survives 
a respace.  because i, too, am all about the respace, babycakes.  but 
because the shape is note-attached and the note is in a transposing 
instrument, the "rest" also transposes.

so there is no clef involved, but the non-transposing staff style has 
helped me out in other strange circumstances.  i.e. no clef as 
expression needed, since there is actually no clef change in this 
instance.
